Govanhill Garlic Growing Collective: The Story

Hannah Macintosh is currently the Coordinator of The People’s Pantry, part of Govanhill Baths Community Trust. Her idea is to start a Govanhill Garlic Growing Collective. This social enterprise will aim to support people in the community to become home garlic growers and come together at harvesting time to ferment the produce. Fermented garlic is not commonly available for purchase, but has verifiable health properties and a unique flavour which can make it a successful product. Profits generated would be used to enable more participants to grow and learn about food.

Govanhill Garlic Growing Collective: Impact and Benefits

The Govanhill Garlic Growing Collective aims to introduce people to growing and taking control of their food system, teach skills that could be easily shared with others, and create a greater sense of community in the Govanhill area. The project will also provide extra support with food in the Govanhill area to the many families and individuals affected by food inequalities. Environmentally, it will introduce locally grown produce and encourage the community to use derelict land which would create a sense of ownership and care and reduce vandalism and fly tipping.

Hannah wants to work with anyone who is interested in growing garlic, as materials, skills and support would be provided to participants to make it as accessible as possible.

Hannah wanted to join the Nature-Based Accelerator to learn how to develop this idea further and successfully put it in to action, as she felt it really could bring positive environmental, social and economic change to Govanhill.
