There is a real struggle today for young care-experienced people in Scotland.
Good Ideas 2020 has now concluded and after the Edinburgh Social Innovation Showcase, run online due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have 11 new social innovators working hard to make an impact. Let us introduce you to the Edinburgh Class and opportunities to work with them to deliver social change.
Each Class member has a unique request. A specific ask that, if fulfilled, will help them make a bigger impact in this next stage. Read on to find out if you can help Susanne Müller make change.
The future we face as a sector is unknown. However, we can make strides towards it with confidence and optimism. Good Ideas supports it’s innovators by bringing people into one place as we have seen time and again that we are stronger together.
Among these people is Susanne the founder of We Discover Together, a future programme and network for care experienced young people.
A Lack of Nurturing Relationships / The Problem
Susanne went to five different schools before the age of 12 and really struggled with the lack of real nurturing relationships around her and connections that helped her to fulfill her potential. As a care-experience person, she was looked after by someone who was not her parent.
There is a real struggle today for young care-experienced people in Scotland. They are less likely to be in positive destinations after leaving school, they struggle, for example, to get to university, they lack social capital. Without the supporting connections that help people develop, they lack the kind of encouragement of real trusting friendships and relationships in life.
Reaching Positive Destinations / The Solution
Susanne is creating the We Discover Together program by care-experienced people for care-experienced young people over the age of 16. Through this six month program, the care-experienced people will come together and build nurturing relationships amongst each other. They will explore their strengths, often unknown, identifying what to do with them and the direction to take them in. They will meet care-experienced adults in positive destinations, hear from them and connect with them.
“We will be meeting a lot of wonderful care-experienced people who are in good, wonderful positive destinations. And they will tell us, how did they get there? How does it feel like, what helped them along and most importantly, they will be sharing some of their relationships with them and help us along and become those wonderful connections that will help the care experience young people with their journey ahead of them.”Susanne Müller
We Discover Together program has moved from concept phase to designing a pilot program.
Showing up for Social Change / The Experience
Susanne had followed Good Ideas for a few years and thought it sounded like great opportunity to test herself and see if she could make an idea happen. She was aware of how difficult it is to start something in your own from scratch but was determined to work hard on her idea, joinned by a network of like minded people on a similar journey.
“Good Ideas is a wonderful program to find people who also decided that they want to show up for social change and doing that together in a group is so powerful, you meet loads of new people. You have a structure within which you can discover how your idea is actually going to make an impact.”Susanne Müller
Creating the Pilot / The Asks
Susanne now needs people who are keen to see a pilot program for care-experienced young people to happen in Edinburgh.
